There are times
when two people
need to step apart
from one another,
but there is no
rule that says they
have to turn and
fire.
~Robert Brault,
A day of worry is
more exhausting
than a day of work.

How Therapy Works
More important than a particular theoretical model is the quality of the relationship between client and
therapist. To this end: building trust, allowing empathy, warmth and unconditional positive regard,
being absent of judgment, knowing when to gently challenge and when to simply be still, are all
qualities the speak to the art of the therapist. Overall, an effective therapist will listen to you with
exquisite sensitivity, and, be aware of his own reactions to the client, and translate those impressions
into meaningful gems of insight that the client can use to make changes and deepen self-knowledge.
Considering new ways of being or interacting with the world, in a safe place (like my office), serves as a
confidence-builder and inner "strengthener" from which a person can try out more effective ways to
get his/her needs met...sometimes for the first time.
Resolution or past hurts, grief, disappointments and losses can be immensely freeing. This "resolution"
process needs to be shepherded by an experienced clinician as it is often the case that long-buried
feelings are intermingled with the memories, requiring a deft hand to help untangle these feelings safely
and at your pace.
